Site Map
As we go through our adventure in barging we come across websites that are of interest to us, and because you are reading this, possibly of interest to you.  Initially we placed these in the text of our site, on a page most closely related to the subject matter.  As these sites become more numerous and diverse we have now located them collectively on this page.  They may also be in the other pages, but this is the central place.

Travelogues

The first site we found was that of Bill and Nancy Koenig, and it still ranks among the top for interesting, well written, down-home descriptions of life on the French waterways.  It is certainly among the most widely read of all barging sites,  and with their next winter planned for life in Paris, promises to continue to be of great interest to all who either live vicariously through their writing or look forward to following in their path.

We have a number of friends who have developed websites, mostly to inform friends and family of their travels and adventures.  In the next few days we will ask if we can include their site among our links, so watch for some additions.

Publications

Last year Bill Cookson put together a book on barges and boats on which people live all year round.  Published by 20/21 Publications of Australia, A Home Afloat includes some lovely vessels with commentary provided by the owners.  If you are interested in ordering a copy, follow this link.

Charters and Hotel Barges
There are quite a number of privately owned barges which take guests for a week or two on paid vacations along the canals, and quite a number of large hotel barges complete with accomplished chefs, fine wines, and staff to cater to the most pampered of tourists.  This site provides a growing list of barges that are in either the charter or hotel business.  We hold no responsibility for the quality of the accommodation or barging experience, but if you are interested in testing the waters, this is a good place to start to look.

Points of Interest

A short time ago we received a request to add a link to a website for a Belgian tourist spot, the Chateau Freyr south of Namur.  We took a look at the site and it was fascinating, not just because of the Chateau, which we will make a point of visiting this summer, but because it also linked to dozens of photographs of scenes in Holland, Belgium and France -   places we had seen, and in one instance had provided the photo (Sneek).  We then proceeded to tour Europe through the efforts of this website, and thoroughly the results of their work.

Associations

You can't be interested in barging without having discovered the DBA, formerly the Dutch Barge Association.  This source of great knowledge about buying, living aboard, cruising, building, and general bargy stuff is the central website for everybody in the European barging community.

Brokers

There are good and bad brokers as there are good and bad in any business.  We don't have a lot of dealings with them so we are not in a position to qualify them.  We have had some dealings with the following companies and are comfortable that, with due diligence on the part of the buyer, these will provide good service.
